Edward Silas Smith, 83, of Ramona passed away at home on November 3, 2017 after a three year bout with cancer.

He was born May 26, 1934 in Washington D.C., the son of Samuel and Esther Smith.  He was the second oldest of four siblings.

On October 17, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After graduating Sea school, he was assigned to the USS Curtiss, there he would head to the Bikini Atoll to guard the hydrogen bomb and later become a member of the group known as the Atomic Marines.

After being honorably discharged, he attended Art Center School on the GI Bill which allowed him to obtain multiple postings as a commercial artist in the Aerospace industry.  During this time he met Sharon Marie Cooley and they were married on September 17, 1960.

Edward's career developed over the years doing illustrations for many genre, from fine Western historical paintings to comic books.  In 1992 he was nominated for the Russ Manning Award for his work on the MGM series Dark Shadows.

He is survived by five children; Edward Rawson (Candace) Smith, Christopher Martin Smith, Kimberly Marie (Norm) Snider, Laura Lynne (Glen) Arthur and Erik Leland (Isela) Smith as well as five grandchildren; Alex Kiel, Chelsea Smith, Jamie Miller, Emma Smith and Nicolas Smith.

Service with full military honors will be held at Miramar National Cemetery on November 21, 2017 at 12:30 pm.
