Andrew R. Dutenhoeffer

January 28, 1931 ~ December 20, 2015 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Andrew (Andy) R. Dutenhoeffer, 84, passed away on December 20, 2015 at Pomerado Hospital, while surrounded by family. Andy was born on January 28, 1931 in Mina South Dakota to Margaret and William Dutenhoeffer where he farmed with the family of 13. He married the love of his life, Bernice Marzolf, on April 19, 1952.  He served eight years with distinction as a member of the United States Marine Corp, stationed out of Camp Pendleton and served in the Korean War.  An HVAC mechanic by trade, he was active in the Sheet Metal Workers’ union for 30 plus years and retired only to take up a second career working for the San Diego Transit system. Andy enjoyed his years of driving and the friends he made along the way. He took his job along the East County route seriously. Always making sure his patrons had food (doughnuts daily) and a friend who would listen. He was recognized on several occasions for his safety and loyalty.  More than anything, Andy loved dancing a good polka or waltz, cars and motorcycles, hunting with his buddies from South Dakota, camping with family, traveling in the motorhome with Bernice, auto racing and a good Bloody Mary to kick off the sausage making parties.  Andy instantly made people feel at ease, was a gifted story teller and master of one-liners. There was rarely a time he didn’t have a smile on his face or the time to help a neighbor in need, especially if it was home improvements. He was most proud of introducing his family when out and about, whether people wanted to know them or not, Andy was making introductions.

Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Bernice Dutenhoeffer of Ramona, children Daryl (Wendy) Dutenhoeffer of Washington, Kimberly (Peter) Malaspina of Carlsbad and Pamela (Jim) Corbett of Ramona, adored and beloved grandsons, Clayton Corbett and Brock Corbett, siblings Hildegard Barger, Kathy Kriech, Carol Volk, Diane Ross brother Duane Dutenhoeffer, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wilber, Arthur, William, Kenneth and sister Marcella.

Services and a celebration of Andy’s life will be conducted at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego on January 21st 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Andrew will receive full military honors conducted by the Department of Defense.  Flowers will be provided by the family.
