Madeline Darrough Grand, 100 passed away peacefully, her loved ones by her side, at the Gardens by the Sea in Carlsbad, CA. She was born in Ramona, CA to Rufus Darrough and Rhea Durbin Darrough who had come West to settle on a farm in the Goose Valley area of Ramona where she was raised. Rufus came across country on a covered wagon and Rhea’s family came by train. One of seven children, she grew up on the family farm and attended school in Ramona. Madeline played on the women’s basketball team at Ramona High School. She met and married Fred August Grand of Julian. After they married, Madeline and Fred moved to Julian to the Grand Family Ranch at the foot of Volcan Mountain. There they would raise their family which included four daughters and one son. Madeline enjoyed family more than anything else. At the time of her passing she had five children, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, ten great, great grandchildren and five great, great, great grandchildren.
When WWII broke out, all three of Madeline’s brothers joined the military. She prayed fervently for their safe return and she was fortunate enough to see them all return to Ramona after the war. This fostered her great appreciation for the military and those that served. She enjoyed seeing the United States flag on display.
Madeline & Fred were lovingly married for more than 50 years and she always encouraged civic responsibility. They both contributed greatly to the communities where they were raised. While living in Julian they operated several businesses including the Banner Store, Grand Tree Farms and FA Grand Timber Products. Fred was Julian Chamber President in 1949 when the Julian Apple Days celebration was revived, and it continues to this day. After moving to Ramona, Madeline supported Fred’s efforts to establish the Ramona Outdoor Community Center where in August of 1972 the multi-purpose arena was named “The Fred Grand Arena” by unanimous decree of the Board of Directors of the Ramona Outdoor Community Center.
Madeline devoted her life to her family and supported each of them in their unique endeavors. Madeline was an early example of a working woman. In addition to the family businesses, she worked at Convair in the San Diego Aviation Division and played an important role facilitating the fulfillment of many of Convair’s most important government contracts. She also went back to school later in life to earn a degree in Early Childhood Development.
A private service will be held at the Julian Pioneer Cemetery on June 8th where she will be laid to rest next to Fred in the Grand Family Plot at the Haven of Rest. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:30pm in the Julian Town Hall.
