Edwin E. Proffer

July 23, 1925 – May 26, 2011

Edwin E. Proffer, of Ramona, passed away quietly at his home on Thursday, May 26, 2011 after a brief illness. Ed was born July 23, 1925 in Cypress, California to Hilda and Elmer Proffer. He is preceded in death by his wife Lyn, his four siblings and two grandchildren.

As a young boy in Cypress, Ed worked to help support his family by plowing fields and picking berries at Knott’s Berry Farm, for the pies they sold on the side of the road. Ed joined the Navy at the age of 17. He fought in World War II, Vietnam, and Korea during his 28 years of honorable service. Ed retired in 1969 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. After moving to Ramona in 1970 he became a “fix anything” handyman around town. He did tractor work for people and owned several rental homes. He and his wife Lyn were also members of the original founders of the Ramona Santana Riders. Ed enjoyed traveling in his camper and seeing the United States and Canada while attending his daughter Roslyn’s many horseshows. He, along with his dog Twister, were a common site on the western APHA show circuit. Ed is survived by his daughter Roslyn (Bob) Proffer-Holloway, sons Rick Proffer (Dottie) and Monty Proffer, five grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery on Wed, June 22, 2011 at 11am. There will be a Celebration of Life service on the same day from 2-5p at the family home in Ramona.

Ed will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Elizabeth Hospice in Escondido, CA. Happy Trails Ed!
