Our dear mother, Ida Dolores Smith, went to be with our Lord and Savior at the age of 95 on Saturday
June 18, 2022, in Julian, California. Her parents were Dolores Gastelum - Frink and Ora Oscar Leonard.
She is survived by her five children, Evan Edward Smith Jr., Dolores (Lollie) West, Romulo (Rom) Smith,
David Smith and Clara Hernandez, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and two more to be
born this year. She had four sisters: Mercedes, Rosemary, Lydia, and Cornelia and a large extended
family of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She grew up in Tucson Arizona, and, while in high school, moved with her family to Coronado, California.
She graduated from Coronado High School and sang in the Starlight Bowl Opera in Balboa Park as a lead
singer. While living in Coranado she met Evan Edward Smith, a Navy Chief and they married in 1948.
Evan Edward Smith served in World War II at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. He had been stationed on the
Naval Ship called the USS Vestal that was tied up next to the Arizona that went down tragically.
They moved with their growing family to Julian, CA. where they lived for several years. She was fun
loving, athletic, and always there for us when we needed help. She will be greatly missed. Ida passed
away peacefully, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at her bedside in
her beloved Julian California.
