Joe Salazar Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected, yet peaceful, passing of Joe Salazar on August 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Joe was born at home in Heber, California, on September 15, 1945, to Esther and Joe Salazar. He is survived by his wife Cathy, his soulmate and partner-in-adventure of 30 years; his loving children: daughter Julie Tarbell and son-in-law Brian; and son Jim Salazar and daughter-in-law, Marnie). He also leaves grandchildren Austin, Tanner, Mason and Brooke; great-grandchildren Nathan, Carter, Preston and Amelia (who is due in January); his devoted sister, Gloria Luna (who called him Baby Joe); and of course his beloved Baja Labrador rescue, Güerita. Joe truly leaves a legacy of family, friendships, and unforgettable escapades.

After graduating from college with his Associates Degree in Electronic Engineering, Joe’s professional career began. He started at Solar Turbines in San Diego, CA and then moved to Southern California Edison several years later. He left SCE and became a contractor, working for SCE as well as other electric companies across the country. After a year of employment at SDG&E, he returned to close his career and retire from SCE. Throughout Joe’s career he played an instrumental role in revolutionizing the automation of the electric distribution system. Joe's innovative ideas and his dedication to mentoring young engineers brought him immense satisfaction.

Beyond the professional realm, Joe's true passions blossomed in the company of his family and friends. He was a devoted father and grandfather, full of pride when watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports, dance, and play. He loved Baja California, Mexico, and he and Cathy cherished their part-time home at Martin Verdugo's Resort, Los Barriles. Joe made new friends everywhere he went. Whether casting a line into the sea, scuba diving, travelling in their RV, off-roading in his "Mexicon" Jeep, his zest for life was ever-present.

As we remember Joe, let us raise our glasses in tribute to a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and colleague. He taught us to live fully, laugh wholeheartedly, and approach life's challenges with unwavering authenticity. Joe would want us to laugh and reminisce rather than “pinchi” cry for him. We are at peace imagining him sharing a beer with his mom and Cathy’s mom; and playing with his dogs Roofus and Chuy. Joe’s ashes will be scattered in the Sea of Cortez, a testament to his enduring connection to the land he loved. A Celebration of Life is planned for September 30th, a time to commemorate Joe's remarkable journey and the myriad of lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society.
