From young teenager to 1972, he worked in the railroad industry, starting with the MKT, then the Great Northern, and ending as a traveling auditor for the Burlington Northern. Keith devoted the next ten years the being a full-time minister for the Church of Christ, teaching the Gospel in Montana, Arizona, and Alabama.
In 1982, Keith started his new career with AT & T in Julian, CA. It was here he put to use the First Class Radio Operator License that he obtained at age 11 by traveling alone to Kansas City, MO, to take the exam. HE retired from AT &T in 1994 in order to assist his wife in the operation of the Julian Pie Company.
Keith was passionate about flying his airplane and was an active member of the Vintage Mooney Club. His lifelong enthusiasm for flying allowed him his last solo long-distance flight just six weeks ago. Contributions in Keith's memory may be made to the Young Eagles Program at www.GiveWingstoeaa.org/take-flight.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and five children: Joni Smothers of Montgomery, AL; David and Dan Smothers of Julian, CA; and Amy Shaw of Las Vegas, NV. Also surviving Keith are his two sisters, Judy Anderson of Gardener, KS, and Genell Smothers of Leawood, KS; and seven grand children.
Keith Smothers was a gentle, God-fearing man who prepared his life for this moment.
