Walter attended Los Angeles City schools, Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California. He had played violin since he was young and prior to USC had received a scholarship to Berkeley. One day he took a good look at his violin teacher’s car, which was painted by hand, and decided to go to USC and become an engineer!
Walter served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a surveyor in the Elsmere Islands. He was employed by Cal Trans and retired in 1995.
Walter had many hobbies and was a man of many interests. One of his favorite hobbies was flying gliders. His best friend since 2nd grade, Jack, participated with him. In later years Walter flew out of Warner’s gliderport. A highlight for him was flying over the Alp,s in a glider, on a visit to Slovenia (the country of his parents’ birth).
Walter enjoyed most music and enjoyed working on his computer. Due to macular degeneration and hearing loss he concluded his 20 years of attending the San Diego Opera.
Walter enjoyed his many years in coaching and refereeing soccer in Glendale and the North County. Hiking in the Sierras was also very special to him. Walter enjoyed his trips to Europe and the United Kingdom. His favorite places were Poipu on Kauai, Sedona, Palm Desert and the Newport Coast.
Walter is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn Richardson. They were married in the Ramona Congregational Church on August 15, 1959 by minister “Tex” Hancock. He is also survived by his children Kenneth and Christopher and his granddaughter, who was his special joy, 15 year old Adrienne.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 10am, Nuevo Memory Gardens, Ramona. Officiating will be Rev. Fred Schaeffer.
