William N Jackson, Lt. Colonel US Army Retired, passed away on Saturday September 10, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanore. He was born February 9, 1917 in Nashville, TN. He is survived by his daughter Kaye Talley and husband Ray of Nashville, TN; daughter Becky Trotter and husband Roy of Nashville, TN; son William Jackson Jr and wife Lisa; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
William proudly served in the US Army for 24 years, in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam and retired as commander of the 7th Special Forces at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1964. He was a highly decorated officer receiving the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.
After he retired William started his own home improvement business in Fayetteville, NC, where he lived for over 40 years, before moving to Escondido, CA with his wife to be closer to his son and his family. William was an avid outdoorsman and loved camping, fishing, hiking, snow skiing and biking. In 1976, at the age of 59, he talked his son into riding bicycles from Williamsburg, VA to Astoria, OR, over 4200 miles in 82 days to celebrate the US Bicentennial. He skied well into his 70's at Beech Mountain, NC and had several trophy bass mounted on his wall.
William was a loyal, kind and generous man who was dearly loved by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life with miliary honors will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to The Elizabeth Hospice of Escondido, CA http:elizabethhospice.org.
