Russell Braxtan

1951 –  2013

Russ was born in WaukeganIL to Charles L. Braxtan and Marguerite Braxtan.  His father was in the Navy and they moved to San Diego when Russell was a young child. He attended Clairemont High School and later received his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from SDSU.  After college he was employed as a land surveyor in Western Colorado, his travels taking him all over the continental divide.  Later he transitioned into sales as a frozen foods distributor for Schwan’s, specializing in Red Barron Pizza.  A management promotion in 1986 brought him to Northern California, where he had another career shift, this time into sales for the medical research industry.  For the past decade he has owned his own business, which sold and installed equipment to the medical research industry.

He married Mary O’Rourke (Braxtan) in 1996 and they moved to Ramona in 1999.  Together they have 2 children, Carter Braxtan (15 years) and Riley Braxtan (12 years).  Russ has 2 children from prior marriages, Henry (Hank) Braxtan (wife Arielle Brachfeld) from Grand Junction, CO and Courtney Braxtan from Ft. Collins, CO.   Russ is also survived by his mother Marguerite Braxtan and brothers Randall and Jimmy.

Russ enjoyed the country life in Ramona, due to his love of animals.  He was an avid sports enthusiast, playing baseball, football, and ice hockey through his life, and coached his sons in both soccer and baseball in Ramona for 9 years. He continued to support baseball and soccer at the travel circuit and high school levels. He was renowned for not only his knowledge, but his quick wit and sarcasm.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m.  Sat. January 26, at Bonham Bros. and Stewart Mortuary Chapel, 321 12th St., Ramona.

Bonham Bros. & Stewart Mortuary and Cremation Service is assisting the family.

Condolence Messages

  1. I have known Russell for almost 8 years, and am very happy to have met and spent time with such a great guy. His love for his family drove him to continue working diligently even in the face of his significant health issues.
Russell will be missed by many of us, and remembered by all.

  2. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Russ. I knew he through his work in medical research. He was a great guy and very fun to be around. My sincere sympathies to his family and loved ones. RIP Mr. Braxton!

  3. Charla Williams :

Oh Russell….. I have known you for so long. You will be very much missed. Fondest memories, other than the Clairemont Theater in Jr High, are watching you at the reunion doing that hula. You should have been an entertainer. You were. Thanks for being in my life. Rest in Peace, buddy! My heart goes out to all your children but they are so lucky to have….I AM SURE… some great and probably hysterical memories of a great dad!
    Love, Charla

  4. My family and I are so sad to hear the news of the passing of Russ. Russ coached both of my boys in both soccer and baseball for years. He truely loved coaching and the kids! I can hear his voice now booming across the Ramona sports fields!

Our prayers go out to Mary and the boys.

  5. To Russ’s children Hank, Courtney, Carter and Riley and his wife Mary, i offer my deepest condolences. 6. David Flanders :

Mary–my thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

  7. Vickie Riojas :

I have known Russell since 1997 or so. One of the things I remember about Russ is that he hated it when people misspelled his last name. He told me once that Toni Braxton spells her name with an “o”. He spells his name with an “a” and he’s not related. Well, Russell, they did it again! You will be missed, my friend!

  8. Ardis Roseberry :

Dear Mary, I am so sorry to hear about Russ. Your time together was way too short; you and the boys are in my prayers at this unhappy time. May your memories and faith sustain you. Sending you cyber hugs and all my love.
    Ardis

  9. You know, I can just hear Russ going off on them for spelling his name wrong. Russ, you put up the quiet valliant fight my friend, never feeling sorry for yourself. You live on in the hearts and minds of your children, as well as those of us who came to love you. I have nothing but admiration for a man who did everything for his children. My hope is that where you are now, you can see them play without looking through a chainlink fence. Signed “the other Grumpy Old Man”

  10. I have known Russ since his B&K days back in the early 90s. He was friendly and always had a joker grin on his face. Little did I know that last Oct at a symposium would be the last time I get to see him and it saddens me. He will be sorely missed by his peers and colleagues especially in the lab animal science industry. May your soul rest in peace, my friend.

To Mary and kids, please accept my sincere condolences. I am so sorry for your loss.

  11. The Sandhofer Family :

  12. Hard to loose a member of our Ramona baseball family. It truly is a family. We all work together for the kids. I coached with and against Russ for many years. He was truly dedicated and will certainly be missed.

  15. Mary, I was shocked and saddened to hear about Russ. I liked Russ a lot and over the years I could always count on him to be honest and straight up with me about my coaching skills :) .We had many small talk sessions and he was always good natured with me. I will remember him fondly. As a community we share your sorrow.

  16. I’ve only known Russ for 3 short years. When I entered the research sales industry he represented 2 companies that I started with. I was very fortunate to spend many hours in trade show booths with him, get to know him and learn from him. Even recently in Minneapolis he was the epitomy of a true professional. We loved to poke each other via email. It was my desire to emulate his business success. He became a mentor and my friend. Russ I will miss you and your sense of humor. My sincere condolences and prayers for your family.

  17. What a shock it was to learn of Russell’s passing. There are no words to help lighten the pain that the family is going through and his friends. I have known Russell since his days at Banton Kingman (as he would say “selling rats”). The last 4 years we have spent trying to get the decon company he envisioned up and running. Russ was a true believer in making the client happy and I am sure there will be many many people saying a prayer for Russ, Mary and the kids.
